HK Haus - Lomas de Chapultepec
Transformation of an abandoned basement into a Garden House.
By understanding the client needs we developed a proposal to solve the main problematic of the house:
To insert natural light into an underground abandoned 300 m2 basement. By digging the main garden of the house 2m below, we managed to lower the garden level, transforming their tiny 6 inches height windows into floor to ceiling windows.
For the new main entrance, we opened a 2 story height transparent facade, opening it with full sunlight during the day.
Visual communication now exists between all the the room interiors and the new garden redesigned with local plants & vegetation.
Efficient Architecture: We accomplished more with less.
We based the new design of the house reusing it´s main structure. With this action we maximized resources, spaces and costs. Open interiors, an open kitchen design and the reuse of some of the the 1920´s woodwork gives the interior space a warm welcoming atmosphere leaving the feeling of an old basement behind. Led lighting through the old wood beams emphasize the idea of the old and new. It also helps with energy savings.
To emphasize the dialogue between nature & interiors, the garden´s landscape design is configured so that each interior has a different view. Since the house is located in the middle of the noisy city we developed a window system
to avoid without losing thermal energy and to isolate exterior noises.
